What is Digital Media?

Nov 12, 2020
Digital Media
In this post I want to clarify what digital media is followed by a second post where I define what kinds of digital media there are ... and of course put this always in context for the business world.

Let's define 'Digital Media'

Of course there are different definitions of digital media. Here we want to see this from the viewpoint of business & marketing. So we are interested what digital media for the wider public is.

In this sense, Digital Media is an umbrella term for all kinds of media that are consumed on a digital device.
Well that was easy. Wasn't it?

Just note under this definition a TV news channel viewed on a mobile phone is also considered digital media.

Digital Media vs Online Media

You might also recall the term 'online media', which was used a LOT some years ago. The term online media was coined to separate the 'new media' from the 'old media' which are present in the 'offline' world - the offline media. So under this definition the above mentioned TV news channel would be an offline media, while a news blog would be an online media. Online and offline media was actually used for MEDIA sources, like publishing houses, TV stations etc., while the term 'digital media' is also used for a company's own website.

Online Media Plan

You can still find the term 'online media' being used in the Online Media Plan, which lists all the different digital MEDIA sources where you can place ads that you pay for: Online publications, website of a magazine, social media ads, search ads... but in an online media plan you would not find your own online posts you are posting on your company owned social media profile.
